Understanding ELO Ratings
What is an ELO Rating?
The ELO rating system is a method for calculating the relative skill levels of players. Named after its creator Arpad Elo, it's used worldwide in chess and many other competitive games.
How ELO Works
- Every player starts with a base rating (typically 1200)
- When you win, you gain rating points; when you lose, you lose points
- The amount of points gained/lost depends on the difference in ratings
- Beating a higher-rated player gives more points than beating a lower-rated player
- Losing to a lower-rated player loses more points than losing to a higher-rated player
Example:
Player A (1500) vs Player B (1300):
- If A wins: A gains ~4 points, B loses ~4 points (expected result)
- If B wins: B gains ~12 points, A loses ~12 points (upset!)
- If draw: B gains ~4 points, A loses ~4 points
Rating Categories
Provisional Ratings
A provisional rating is a temporary rating for new players who haven't played enough games for an accurate rating.
Why Provisional Ratings?
- New players' true skill level is unknown
- Ratings adjust faster to find the correct level quickly
- Protects established players from large rating swings
How It Works:
- Players are provisional for their first 30 games
- Provisional K-factor: 32 (ratings change faster)
- Established K-factor: 16 (ratings change slower)
- Look for the "?" symbol next to provisional ratings
